How to update your Joomla URLs for better search engine ranking

Joomla is a database of pages, thus the database has a special way of calling up page content.  Joomla out of the box creates URLs (ie, web addresses) to pages, e.g., as such:

http://signaturebella.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&category_id=1
&flypage=shop.flypage&manufacturer_id=0&page=shop.product_details&product_id=2&Itemid=7

It would very nice to make it look more readable, like so: 

http://signaturebella.com/virtuemart/Pagoda-Black-Umbrella-Canopy.html
